Indian caters to many regional and cultural weddings. It is a land of diverse cultures. The Sikh marriage is one of the auspicious occasions in Indian culture. The importance of wedding traditions in Sikh marriages has its own flavour.

The Anand Karaj, a Sikh marriage holds a plethora of functions and rituals. A big fat wedding takes a whole week of celebrations. The wedding always happens to be in daylight and the date is fixed by the family members, unlike in Hindu weddings where the date is taken out by the pandit by matching kundalis.

Different Sikh rituals before the wedding

A Sikh wedding has its pivotal significance. It begins with the purchase of the four pieces of cloth to cover the holy book called 'Guru Granth Sahib'.

There are a lot many small rituals that take place like

Kurmai (engagement ceremony) -

where the engagement of the boy and girl takes place in the presence of friends and families of both parties.

Chunnichadai-

Before the wedding day, the groom's mother covers the head of the girl with a chunni, signifying the acceptance of the bride to the boy's family.

Chooda ceremony-

Prior to the wedding, the girl's maternal uncle brings the set of 21 red and white bangles called chooda, which is worn by the bride.

Maiya-

This ritual signifies the cleansing ceremony of the bride and groom. They sit on the stool and oil is applied to their head and body.

Vatna (Haldi ceremony)-

It's DJ night but in a very traditional way. Beautiful outfits, colourful dupatta, and wedding songs are the best part of the Jago ceremony.

the wedding "Anand Karaj"- The Anand Karaj is regarded as a "Blissful Occasion". The couple takes the Lavaan Pheras in the presence of the holy Guru Granth Sahib at the gurudwara.

All the wedding traditions in Sikh marriages signify preservation of cultures, the transmission of cultures, honour and respect, companionship, unity, and long-term relationship.

The foremost importance is the focus on the unity of the families and not only the individual couples. It is an institution on which the whole society will grow and prosper. All the traditions are done in a very cordial manner without any hurry.
